Susan Grossman takes a gritty realist view of New York neighborhoods and boroughs where children figure prominently. Grossman focuses on urban children, singling out one childs figure just as he or she is about to be touched by a dramatic moment in their daily life. Grossmans drawings have a staged, cinematic appearance and a rich chiaroscuro beauty, They are also full of narrative complexity and metaphorical suggestiveness. From the center of the beauty of her environs (in this case Brooklyn Heights) - its inhabitants, building structures and social conditions, Grossman gives a mythic response to the private dramas of the everyday scene.
